The Baragwi Farmers Co-operative Society Limited was officially registered on Oct 26, 1953, with the aims to promote the social and economic interests of its members; arrange for coffee processing, grading, packing, transporting and marketing for its members, at the best prices; and “any other activity deemed necessary” for the healthy prosperity of its members.The society has 137 staff members, 31 of whom are women.The Kariru factory opened in 1986 and uses fresh river water for processing. It has also implemented a water recycling system that enables it to re-use the same water, which has drastically reduced the factory’s water consumption.After being washed in river water, coffees are dried in the sun on raised beds. Approximately 1,500 smallholder farmers contributed to this microlot.
